Key takeaways

  • Get practical tips for holiday shopping on a budget.

  • Find out how to make the most of seasonal sales.

  • See how Snap’s lease-to-own financing can help you shop now and pay over time.

The holidays bring plenty of reasons to celebrate, along with plenty of opportunities to overspend. Between gifts, travel, entertaining, and seasonal household needs, expenses can add up quickly. According to LendingTree, 37% of Americans took on holiday debt in 2025, and 62% of shoppers charged their purchases to credit cards.

Thoughtful planning may help you make informed decisions about what to purchase, what to postpone, and when lease-to-own financing Snap Finance may be worth considering.

How can you keep holiday shopping on a budget?

A little preparation can make a big difference when holiday shopping begins. Whether you're checking off your list or replacing an essential household item, these five holiday budgeting tips can help you manage expenses throughout the season.

1. Set a realistic holiday budget

Before you shop, determine how much you can spend without falling behind on your regular financial obligations.

Start by reviewing your income, savings, and upcoming bills. Then set a total spending limit and divide it into categories, such as:

  • Gifts for family and friends

  • Holiday meals and entertaining

  • Travel and transportation

  • Decorations and seasonal activities

  • Essential household purchases

  • Shipping, taxes, and unexpected expenses

Don't forget to account for existing credit card balances and other payment obligations. Setting a budget based on money you actually have available may help you avoid committing to purchases you may struggle to cover later.

2. Compare holiday deals before you shop

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and other seasonal sales give shoppers opportunities to find discounted merchandise. However, a promotional price doesn't necessarily mean you're getting the lowest available price.

Compare offers from multiple retailers before making a purchase. Pay attention to more than the advertised discount.

Here's what to check:

  • Final price: Compare the actual selling price rather than relying solely on the advertised percentage off.

  • Shipping and delivery: Include any additional charges when calculating your total.

  • Return policies: Check return deadlines, restocking fees, and other restrictions.

  • Product details: Confirm you're comparing the same models, sizes, and features.

  • Payment terms: If you're considering financing, compare the total cost of payments with the merchandise's cash price.

Most importantly, stick to your shopping list. Even a substantial discount won't help your budget if you're purchasing something you didn't plan to get.

3. Prioritize needs over wants

Holiday sales can make upgrades and impulse purchases tempting. But when you're working with a limited budget, it helps to distinguish between what you need and what you'd simply like to have.

Start with essential purchases. For example, replacing a broken refrigerator or getting new tires before winter may take priority over upgrading a working television or replacing furniture that's still in good condition.

Consider asking yourself three questions before making a purchase:

  • Do I need this item now, or can it wait?

  • Have I included the full cost in my budget?

  • Will this purchase affect my ability to cover other expenses?

If the item isn't essential, consider postponing it until you've saved enough to cover the cost.

4. Track your holiday spending

Setting a budget is only the beginning. Tracking what you actually spend can help you stay within your limits as the season progresses. Use a spreadsheet, budgeting app, or simple list to record purchases and monitor how much money remains in each category. You can also set up banking notifications to alert you when transactions occur or your account balance drops below a certain amount.

5. Consider your payment options carefully

What if you need a major household item during the holidays but don't have enough money to cover the full price upfront? Depending on your circumstances, you may have several payment options. These include using available savings, paying with a debit card, using a credit card, or exploring financing for qualifying purchases.

Each option has different costs and obligations.

For example, lease-to-own financing lets you use eligible merchandise while making payments over time, but the total lease cost may exceed the merchandise's cash price.

Before choosing any pay-over-time option, review the payment amounts, schedule, total cost, and terms. Only take on a payment commitment you expect to meet alongside your regular expenses.

How can Snap Finance fit into your holiday budget?

Snap Finance's no-credit-needed lease-to-own financing¹ may provide another way to get qualifying merchandise and pay over time. Unlike a credit card, a lease-to-own agreement isn't revolving credit, but it still creates an ongoing payment obligation.

All credit types are welcome to apply, including shoppers with less-than-perfect credit or no credit history.¹ Not all applicants are approved.

Here's how Snap's lease-to-own financing works:

  1. Apply: Complete an application online or at a participating retailer. The application takes minutes, and you can receive a decision in seconds with no impact to your FICO® score to apply.¹

  2. Shop: If approved, you may qualify for $300 to $5,000 in lease-to-own financing, subject to underwriting.² Use your approved amount toward the cash price of eligible merchandise at participating retailers.

  3. Pay over time: Snap Finance purchases the merchandise from the retailer and leases it to you. You make scheduled payments according to your lease agreement.

  4. Obtain ownership: Once you've completed the required payments and fulfilled the terms of your lease agreement, you own the merchandise.

Snap's lease-to-own financing involves a contractual payment obligation, and the total cost may be higher than the merchandise price. It isn't a way to shop without taking on a financial commitment.

What should you know about Snap Finance's payment plans?

Snap Finance offers a Maximum-Term Plan and early ownership options.³ The plan you follow affects how much you ultimately pay.

The Maximum-Term Plan includes 12–18 month renewable terms and is the highest-cost option. By default, your lease is scheduled for the maximum term. Or, eligible customers may choose to reduce their overall lease costs by exercising an early ownership option, including available early buyout promotions, when they satisfy the applicable requirements.³

Before entering an agreement, review the following:

  • The cash price of the merchandise and total lease cost

  • The amount and frequency of scheduled payments

  • Any initial payment, taxes, or applicable fees

  • Eligibility requirements and merchandise restrictions

  • Available early ownership options and their deadlines

  • The terms for ending the agreement or returning merchandise

Early ownership options require customers to make all required payments on time and satisfy the applicable payment amount within the required timeframe. These options may still include a cost of lease above the merchandise price.³

The amount you can pay over time should fit your household finances beyond the holiday season. If the payments would interfere with essential expenses or existing commitments, consider postponing the purchase.

What holiday essentials can you get with Snap Finance?

Participating Snap Finance retailers carry a variety of durable merchandise that may qualify for lease-to-own financing. Depending on the retailer and merchandise eligibility, these categories may include furniture, mattresses, appliances, electronics, and certain tires and wheels.⁴

For example, you might need to replace an appliance before hosting family gatherings or get new tires for winter travel.

Snap's lease-to-own financing applies to eligible merchandise rather than general holiday spending, gift cards, or services. Confirm merchandise eligibility and any restrictions with the participating retailer before completing your transaction.

Make your holiday spending plan work for you

The holidays are a time to celebrate, not a reason to take on financial commitments you can't sustain. By setting a realistic budget, comparing prices, prioritizing essential purchases, and tracking spending, you can approach seasonal shopping with a clearer understanding of what you can afford. And when paying the full price upfront isn't possible for an essential item, lease-to-own financing from Snap Finance can get you the seasonal essentials you need now.
